Caring for Yourself is Important

Parental self care is just as important as the care that we give our children.

Big statement, but it’s true.  For some reason as parents, we often feel pressured into thinking that the children are first 100% of the time.  This is largely true, such as when a newborn is hungry, feed them; (NOW!) or that we need to ensure they are fed, clean and take care of medical needs.  It is a full time job, but all full time jobs have breaks.

BREAKS? WHAT?

It is not 100% necessary to be involved in EVERY activity your child is involved in.  Such as, when an infant is on their play mat, happily playing with their toys; you have a break (albeit the tiniest break known to man).  If they are happy, you can supervise them and all their needs are met, this is your turn to shine!

What makes you happy is something you should really take some time to consider, from the tiniest enjoyment to the longer, bigger things.  If you really enjoy a coffee, sit near them during this time and have a coffee.  If you can steal thirty seconds to sit without something or someone on your lap to just sit, do it!  If you are someone who enjoys all the dishes being away or bench clean (I’m completely guilty of this), do it.  Just do whatever it is that will give you a bit of peace and happiness; even if it is the nice breeze or if you do catch 5 minutes of your favourite show.

We also are guilty of “when will I get it all done?” as parents; such as when we get the well meaning advice of let the housework go or do it when they are sleeping.  Sleep when they sleep, if you can (or need to).  Do your chores with them.  It does take much longer (and often can have counterproductive aspects), however it means you are (a) interacting with your child, (b) teaching them to be helpful and (c) maintaining your sanity!  The older they get, you can give them little chores to do to “help you”.  Just be patient and BREATHE.

Ultimately, choose what makes you happy; from a 30 second activity to those hour long (or more) things you can do to make you happy.
